The winding path of the labyrinth helps you let go of your thoughts. And slowly, my breath calms and I open myself up to the answers of the labyrinth.
The boys see the labyrinth and begins to walk it, as children do, very quickly. I continue to walk my own path and stand aside to let them pass. The boys begin walking even faster. They no longer walk but run in the labyrinth. Their father calls them again, and the two youngest boys follow after their father. The eldest son, however, continues to follow the path of the labyrinth. The eldest boy must feel some pressure now that his father is no longer waiting for him. He runs through the paths of the labyrinth, but ultimately it takes too long to reach the center, so I see him jump into the center and write something in the sand.
He then runs to catch up to his father and brothers. My own inner journey has become distant, as I have been paying attention to the boy. I am curious and I start wondering what he has written in the center.
What would a 9-year old boy write— pressured by his father and anxious to make it to the center? My thoughts began to go everywhere and I noticed that I also started walking faster, just like the boy!
My own silence was gone. I arrive in the center of the labyrinth and read what the boy has written. It makes me cry with joy. He wrote his name in the heart of the labyrinth: For me it meant that he made it. He had overcome the labyrinth. I felt moved by this boy who came on my path. I stay a while in the center and let the experience sink in. I realize that the labyrinth and those who entered it with me gave me the answer to my question, where should I focus?
Focus on yourself and make sure you can write your name on your heart. I slowly walked the path back out of the labyrinth and reflected a bit further. I experienced a feeling of contentment. I realized that the labyrinth again gave me what I needed in that moment, including the father, the boys and writing.
I am so grateful for the Aruba Peace labyrinth and happy that it is always open for us to walk it and helps us find our inner wisdom. Yesterday was a beautiful morning. I was going for a nice long beach walk at Eagle Beach. I was doing my normal routine, which is picking up plastic at the seashore to prevent it from falling in the ocean.
I love this early time at the beach, it is so peaceful. Only a few people were walking and only a few swimmers in the ocean. Pelicans and seagulls flying by. The man wishes me a good week and I say: It is brilliant and magical how they flow together in one wave at that exact moment of perfect balance and harmony.. Together they jump in harmony; together they shine. It was a glorious moment that touched my soul. I have so much gratitude for being able to witness it. The Poppies, the roses, the corn flowers and yellow fields; I was totally in love with all the flowers on the Camino.
It was so joyful. The red poppies energized me to continue my path even when I was tired. The fields of flowers made me sing and I often sat with the flowers and admired their beauty. If you take a good look at the poppy flower you will notice that the center is sometimes purple and sometimes black, like a beautiful colored Mandala. The corn flowers also brought back sweet memories from my youth when I would lay in the grass, count the clouds, or pick flowers, make flower crowns while I wandered.
One day on the Camino I found this amazing hidden spot overlooking the mountains where I found all these clovers. I sat there for hours and made a flower wreath of yellow clovers on my hat. Ralph Waldo Emerson said: The Flowers help you smile. So the flowers made me love, smile, cry with joy, and feel peace. I realized that people touch you in the same way. There was this Danish Pilgrim on my Camino that made me laugh so hard I started crying.
And a Brazilian Pilgrim that was the most relaxed human being alive; with him I felt at peace. A Californian Pilgrim was the sweetest flower around, she made me feel loved. An Australian could really empower and energize me. And this French couple humbled me. Another wise pilgrim gave me clarity. For me, all these people had the same impact as the flowers on my path. They gave me love, joy, encouragement and peace.
Who are the flowers in your life? How do they make you feel? Are they aware they are a flower in your life? Let them know you might also be a flower in their life. Walking the Camino de Santiago de Compostela was life-changing!! Nature is so amazingly beautiful. I learned a lot about myself physically, emotionally and spiritually. I also learned a lot about community, pilgrimage, bonding, belonging and simple life from all the wonderful people I encountered on my Camino de Santiago de Compostela.
My adventures were challenging sometimes but so awesome. Being on my own on this day journey was like a rite of passage for me. It made me so much stronger.
The length of the Camino taught me how to trust myself in making decisions and to choose, time and again, my own path. It also clarified for me how important my family is to me. This was mostly because I was too physically tired at the end of the day. There is a huge difference between just going for a walk and going on a pilgrimage with a clear intention. In setting an intention, I became much more aware of the amazing things happening all around me.
But I also needed time to process my experiences, just like any rite of passage in which you are changed in some way. Going over the Pyrenees was so amazing, walking in the clouds, watching the horses running around, seeing the green meadows and the wonderful views over the mountains when the clouds opened up.
The rainbows, the sun shining over the meadows and yellow fields, simply amazing. I was in awe most of the time. All of the Camino is just breath-taking. The flowers kept on smiling to me and the birds kept on singing and travelling with me. I have never felt so alive. I am excited to share the stories of those adventures with you later. Many pilgrims embraced me right from the start which was so heart-warming. It was therefore harder to stay with my intention to walk the Camino on my own.
And often, I enjoyed the company of my pilgrim friends. Ultimately it became one of the most valuable lessons of the Camino, to time and again choose my own path. This is very exciting. My hope is that it will be an exchange of stories, not only from me. It is my intention to also hear your stories. You might have been travelling or going through a change which you could also consider as a form of pilgrimage or a rite of passage.
Any time you spend away from home whether it is vacationing in Europe, attending summer camp, going on honeymoon or my days on the Camino, it will change things for you. It will bring new perspectives; shine a different light that will make you feel different in some way. If you have had your own pilgrimage, you too can ask yourself questions upon returning. How did this event or trip affect me?
What did I learn? Am I seeing things differently now? Is there something I would like to change in my life? As you answer these questions, you might discover something very valuable. Applaud yourself for taking the time to process. If you like to share your discovery here online, I would love to hear from you. You can share your comments below. For many years I have been dreaming about walking the Camino of Santiago the Compostela on my own. Although many have walked the Camino of Santiago de Compostela since the Middle Ages to grow spiritually, it seemed hard for me to take that journey that will challenge you physically and mentally.
So I kept this dream on my vision board and continued following stories about the Camino or in English the Way of St James. Something shifted however in me whilst I was vacationing in Costa Rica. On property I enjoyed a rainforest massage and I took a yoga class. Taking this yoga class was transformational. Not that I never had taken a yoga class but it was a long time ago that I practiced yoga as I prefer hiking these days. So here I am in the yoga class and it is really tough for me.
I am trying to keep up with all the poses. And instead of resting in child pose or just making the poses easier for myself, I continue to follow the yoga instructor. I also won the gravity game by falling over.
The class was so hard for me. When I finally just in my perception lay in Shavasana lay down pose at the end of the class I felt literally every muscle in my body. Glad it was over and proud that I did it. Why did I make it so hard on myself? I could have been gentler. Was it to proof myself I could do it? I stayed with it for a while and started wondering about other hard things, like taking on too many clients, hiking too long so I get lost in the dark, offering someone to help when I know I need a well-deserved afternoon off.
Actually there were quite some things that I called hard to do in my head, but wondering about it, I could come up with simple steps that made it easier. Saying it is hard to do, make you think it is hard. But if you wonder about it, and ask yourself how can I make it easier, gentler, softer or safer; you become quite creative in finding ways to make it easy.
As I was admiring this beautiful rainforest in Costa Rica I am realizing that walking the Camino is meant to challenge me physically and mentally. It will challenge my comfort zone especially being away from my family and friends. But maybe I am making it harder as it is. If I am tired whilst walking the Camino I can walk for 5 hours instead of 8 hours during these days.
If I miss my family, I can call them, travel back home. Just like using a child pose to rest in Yoga class, I can find ways on the Camino every day to make it easier. This amazing beautiful Camino that is walked by many thousands every year will enrich my life for sure and I am going to make it!
Hope it will give you some insights. When I made that decision, it totally lighted me up and it already made it easier for me to know that I am going and no longer only dream about it. It is my intention to grow spiritually from this journey and to fully enjoy it. And I hope that sharing my adventures on the Camino with you will inspire you to also take on a challenge for 40 days.
What goal could you work on to make it a reality? What journey would you like to take? It is not hard to do; it is easier than you think! As I entered my house, my dogs Chili, Tommie and Juno were not greeting me. I immediately knew something is up. It is too silent. What are they doing? I quickly discovered they had been hunting and caught a big iguana. They had bitten off the tail already and the Iguana looked dead.
Its eyes were open, but totally frozen. I called for the dogs; Chili and Juno came, but Tommie looked at me and decided to take his victory pose, showing off his prey. She is a street dog and half his size but a real hunter. I decided to leave the Iguana. Maybe he is still alive or maybe not. And if he is dead, I will take care of it tomorrow, I thought.
